Fresh Paint Gallery presents “Piecing it Together:  Collage Work by Jennifer Nelson and G. E. Vogt.”  Jennifer Nelson is a free-lance graphic designer and mixed media artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  She has 9 years of formal training, including classes at Atelier Lack and a BFA from the University of Minnesota at Deluth.  Nelson often works with objects found in thrift stores and garage sales, or, in the case of her “Patterns of Dress” series, in her grandmother’s attic.  In creating her tin collages, for example, Nelson “harvests” old tin containers by cutting them up into fragments, then  pieces them together to create whole new narratives.  The results are playful, whimsical and often tongue-in-cheek.

G. E. Vogt began her artistic training in performance art and directing.  In order to create the highly physical, postmodern performance pieces she was drawn to, she would gather found materials from as many arts as possible: poetry, news articles, paintings, philosophy, even the acting training exercises of the actors involved. The performance pieces eventually became living collages of the ideas and materials gathered. As she began to travel and live in different parts of the world, Vogt began to create paper collage art, experimenting with intermingling different found sources and materials. She became increasingly interested in telling complex stories through collage work until she moved out of the performance arts altogether. Vogt has exhibited her work in group shows across the U.S. and has most recently spoken on the panel, “Women In Collage,” at the annual Kolajfest in New Orleans, LA.
