Open Call for Participation

Project Vision

ENVZN23 is a one-of-a-kind visual and performing arts festival, spearheaded by the innovative arts nonprofit Vanguard Culture. This groundbreaking event will take place in the Logan Heights community of San Diego on September 2, 2023 from 5:00pm – 10:00 p.m.. ENVZN23 aims to spark increased cultural tourism for our region and highlight the virtuosity of its creative sector. We expect ~5,000 design professionals, art patrons, and other culture-seekers from the San Diego / Tijuana region to attend. ENVZN will invigorate the Commercial Street corridor with inclusive and diverse, multi-sensory art interventions ranging from video art, to contemporary dance, live music & theatre, puppetry, spoken word, short films screenings, full scale art installations and more. The ENVZN festival will return in 2024 for an audience of thousands of design professionals and culture seekers from around the region and around the world.

The visual, performing, and culinary experiences at this event will:

  • Be authentically San Diego / Tijuana,
  • Engage and include the Logan Heights community
  • Inspire conversations about innovation and design within the arts, and;
  • Bring people together in meaningful ways.

About Vanguard Culture

Vanguard Culture is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to advancing San Diego’s creative industry workforce, and has been on the forefront of unique cross-industry cultural programming for years. Its board of directors and advisory board is comprised of San Diego’s most notable and highly connected arts leaders and its innovative programming was recently featured on the National Geographic Channel. Vanguard Culture’s award-winning arts magazine has a reach of 18k+ weekly subscribers, 8k-10k monthly website visitors and more than 1/2 MILLION yearly on social media. Its professional development programs have benefited thousands of creative industry professionals from the San Diego region and around the world.


Visual Arts

Vanguard Culture seeks up to 10 visual artists to submit existing or new work that: 

  1. Promotes innovation in the visual arts,
  2. Is unique, inspiring, or otherwise responsive to the changes and challenges of our contemporary world.
  3. Resonates with the binational character of our region, 
  4. Engages with the local communities of San Diego or Tijuana
  5. Is an installation, social practice activation or interactive/multi-media artwork. 
  6. Is flexible and can be expressed as site-specific or site-responsive depending on the locale assigned to the artist.

Compensation: Stipends will range up to $3,000 depending on the scope of the project.

Cultural partners* may apply their $500 in-kind sponsorship of Vanguard Culture towards their proposal and receive partnership benefits based on the value of their contribution.   • Cover page with name, email, phone number, website of primary point of contact
  • 300 max. word description of your vision for the project and any specific technical needs that we should be aware of.
  • A detailed budget outline. Please include value of any in-kind support you may want to offer.
  • 3-4 videos or images of the artwork if it is existing work.
  • 3-4 videos or images of any past work that is similar in scope or concept. 
  • A numbered image list with information about all of the images or videos submitted. 
  • Videos should be submitted via links to video hosting platforms such as YouTube or Vimeo. 
  • High res. images should be shared via a link to content storage platforms such as Dropbox or Google Drive.

Performing Arts

Vanguard Culture seeks up to 6 performers or performing arts groups to submit existing or new performance pieces that:

  1. Are unique, innovative, inspiring, or otherwise responsive to the changes and challenges of our contemporary world.
  2. Resonates with the binational character of our region.
  3. Engages with the local communities of San Diego or Tijuana
  4. Is up to 30 minutes in length and can be performed at least twice through the evening.
  5. Can be flexible and performed in both indoor and outdoor spaces ranging from a 10’ x 10’ footprint to a 20’x20’ footprint depending on the locale assigned.
  6. Experiences that can be expressed as audience interactive, immersive, participatory, or site-specific/ site-responsive are highly encouraged.
