SUMMARY:Transformative Currents: Art and Action in the Pacific Ocean
DESCRIPTION:Transformative Currents: Art and Action in the Pacific Ocean examines the historical causes and ongoing effects of the cultural and environmental devastation of the Pacific Ocean and harnesses art’s potential to enact positive ecological change\, both planetary and local. Covering nearly one-third of the earth’s surface\, the Pacific Ocean is home to thousands of interconnected peoples\, species\, and ecosystems—all under threat from climate change\, industrial pollution\, and overfishing. Works in diverse media by 21 contemporary artists and collaborative teams are organized around the theme of ocean currents\, which traverse the Pacific and suggest fluidity\, interconnectivity\, and collective responsibility.\n\n\n\nEach project addresses a specific issue affecting the oceanic environment; together\, they highlight the interdependency of resources and the impact of local actions on global problems. At a time when the health of the Pacific Ocean is in a fragile and volatile state\, Transformative Currents: Art and Action in the Pacific Ocean unites art\, science\, and Indigenous knowledge systems to raise awareness and improve coastal conditions. In addition to the Oceanside exhibition\, there will be two satellite presentations at the (OCMA) in Costa Mesa and the in Newport Beach.\n\n\n\nOceanside Museum of Art 704 Pier View Way Oceanside\, CA 92054\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Blue Gold: The Art and Science of Indigo
DESCRIPTION:Blue Gold: The Art and Science of Indigo is among more than 70 exhibitions and programs presented as part of Getty’s 2024 PST ART initiative. Returning in September 2024 with its latest edition\, PST ART: Art & Science Collide\, this landmark regional event explores the intersections of art and science. The heart of PST ART is always the distinctive cultural identity of Southern California and the universal hunger for artistic and intellectual discovery.\n\n\n\nIndigo\, a varied plant family that grows worldwide and the deep\, blue dye it produces\, has a long and multifaceted history of cultivation\, production\, and distribution. Indigo is everywhere – in Japanese kimonos\, West African traditional garments\, saris from India\, and painted onto architectural structures in the southern United States. Blue Gold combines craft\, science\, and history to explore this color’s complex past and present. Featuring stunning objects of creative expression coupled with the astonishing study of a chemical reaction\, this exhibition presents indigo as a compelling manifestation of art and science. Indigo’s beauty and ubiquity have eclipsed the unpleasant realities of its growth and manufacture\, including hard labor and pollution and its association with colonialism and slavery. This exhibition highlights the importance of nuanced conversations that celebrate beauty without skipping over a grim past. Discover the roles of botany\, chemistry\, ecology\, and economics in indigo cultivation and dive into a deeper appreciation for blue hues. Through workshops and talks led by local artists\, including a Master Craftsman Lecture with Porfirio Gutiérrez and Dyeing Classes with Sarah Winston\, be immersed in the world of indigo. There is magic in the transformation from plant to pigment. SUMMARY:MARSHALL TOOMEY: BLACK AMERICANA
DESCRIPTION:Marshall describes his work as autobiographical. “My own style is blended with traditional techniques to create an enriched view of the life I’ve experienced. I placed myself in the scene along with other characters from my life. I am taking a look at the positives in everyday life; the perspectives\, traditions\, and routines of being outside of the struggles.\nMy paintings represent moments in time. I aim for realism with incredible vitality—they feel almost alive. I like to paint portraits\, animals\, and food. I have always had a drive to be the best artist I could be. I continue to constantly look at the masters of art in magazines and books\, and study every cartoonist I see.\nThis first solo show is an extremely important step early in my fine art career. Telling a NEW story is my goal. Museums need a different look at history for people to see that there is always more to the story.”\nToomey’s mission is to make art for the masses. His early childhood goal was to have a successful syndicated comic strip running daily in every newspaper in the world. Although he sent hundreds of submissions to syndicates into his young adult years\, he never got picked up. Although he had to let go of that particular dream\, he never gave up on dreaming altogether and at 24-years-old he bought a one-way ticket to Hollywood\, California. Toomey went on to become a successful animator with a 40-year career as a professional artist\, including 20 years at Walt Disney Animation Studios. His credits include participation in Aladdin (1992)\, The Lion King (1994)\, The Hunchback of the Notre Dame (1996)\, and Hercules (1997). He also illustrated many books\, including The Lion King book created after the movie.\nToomey was born in 1953 and raised in Kansas City\, Missouri. He was selected for this solo exhibition as the Grand Prize winner in OMA’s 2023 Artist Alliance Biennial\, for his painting The Shop.\nOceanside Museum of Art\n704 Pier View Way\nOceanside\, CA 92054\n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Betty Boop has been a cultural icon for nearly 100 years. In collaboration with Fleischer Studios\, this one-of-a-kind exhibit embarks on a nostalgic journey\, starting with Betty’s beginnings to her rise to international popularity—and what makes her a fan favorite today. SUMMARY:Women in Focus
DESCRIPTION:“Although the result is obtained by chemical means\, the little work it entails will greatly please ladies.” So wrote one of photography’s inventors\, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (1787–1851)\, about his eponymous daguerreotype in 1839. Daguerre’s words\, which associate women with idleness\, are clearly misogynistic. Yet in a backhanded way\, Daguerre predicted the pivotal role women would play in photography since its invention in the 1830s. Undaunted by photographic chemistry—and often neglected or derided by their male peers—women have made huge contributions to the development of the medium across a variety of genres.\n \nIn the nineteenth century\, photography was more accessible than established artistic disciplines like painting and sculpture because it was new and thus free from conventional training that historically prohibited women. It was relatively inexpensive to start and could be practiced at home with makeshift darkrooms set up in closets or bathrooms. Yet even with fewer barriers to entry\, women faced their share of constraints in a male-dominated field. Expectations of gender often dictated the themes they could pursue\, encouraging portraiture and still life rather than photographs of war and exploration.\n \nWomen took up photography in increasing numbers in the twentieth century\, and by the 1930s\, some of the most successful photographers in the world included Margaret Bourke-White\, Dorothea Lange\, and Imogen Cunningham\, all on view in this exhibition. Women in Focus\, drawn from The San Diego Museum of Art’s permanent collection (which merged with the Museum of Photographic Arts in 2023)\, allows for a fuller account of the medium’s history by highlighting how women have shaped photography from the mid-nineteenth century to today.\n \nMuseum of Photographic Arts\n@ The San Diego Museum of Art\nNash Gallery\nFebruary 1 – July 13\, 2024\n \n\n \n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Movidas Razquaches and Other Cheap Thrills
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Southwestern College Art Gallery for the opening of Movidas Razquaches and Other Cheap Thrills\, a collection of new work by artist Perry Vásquez. The exhibition is open from February 4 – March 4\, 2025. Regular Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday\, 10:30 AM -2:30 PM or by appointment.\nABOUT THE LANGUAGE\nAccording to Tomás Ybarra-Frausto\, rasquachismo is a sensibility that gets expressed in Chicano cultural forms and practices. Ybarra-Frausto writes\, “It is a sensibility that is not elevated and serious\, but playful and elemental. It finds delight and refinement in what many consider banal and projects an alternative aesthetic\, a sort of good taste of bad taste.” Like African-American funk\, or the improvised inventions of Rube Goldberg\, the emphasis is on wit\, resourcefulness and working with what is at hand. The add-on word\, movida\, can be translated as a maneuver\, or a play (as in a game). Poet Juan Felipe Herrera interprets movidas rasquaches as “cheap thrills”\, linking it to a pleasurable activity open to anyone who cares to partake. While legal scholar Alfredo Mirandé offers the word “hustle\,” suggesting an illicit or unethical way to make a living. Sociologist David Spener uses movidas rasquaches to describe the network of the ad hoc work-arounds and tricks employed by migrants to navigate the US/Mexico border. While no single one of these terms perfectly captures the full meaning\, taken together they give a reliable framework for interpretation.\nABOUT THE WORK\nOver the last year and a half\, Vásquez has created new work that divides into four projects using different media and including collaborative and solo work. Some of the projects are well established while others are being presented to the public for the first time in this exhibition.\n\nBlankets\nVásquez collects flyers advertising gardening services left on his driveway by workers seeking employment. The no-thrills graphic style and the not-so-subtle way in which they seem to copy each other caught the artist’s eye. The act of weaving the flyers into blanket designs celebrates the DIY approach while reminding us of the workers’ aspirations to provide warmth and shelter for their families.\n\nLe Voyage/El Viaje\nThis is an AI imaging project whose goal was to rethink and replace the transactional language used to prompt and generate AI images. “The AI image making process is hyper-focused on the outcome as the only part of the process with artistic merit. The prompt itself is written to be transactional and limiting.” Vásquez turned the process of generating imagery into a Surrealist game by inserting lines from French poet Charles Baudellaire’s poem Le Voyage into the software. The resulting images were used as the basis for a series of oil paintings.\n\nMonopalms\nThe presence of cell towers disguised as palm trees (monopalms) has become a common sight in Southern California. This series of paintings implies the link between palm trees and the myth of paradise. The paintings also offer commentary on the telecommunications industry and how it alters our perception of nature and our sense of public and private space.\n\nMexus Nexus Fluxus\nInspired by Mexican recording artist Esquivel and the German techno artist Señor Coconut\, Vásquez arranged four traditional Mexican songs for the synthesizer. He then worked with visual artists Lianne Mueller-Thompson and Carlos Solorio to create video and animations for the music. The music will be presented as a video installation.\nRECEPTIONS\nSaturday February 8\, 11 AM -1 PM.\n(free parking in Lot O for this event)\n\nTuesday\, February 11\, 11 AM -1 PM.\nSouthwestern College Art Gallery\n900 Otay Lakes Rd.\nRm 88-101\nChula Vista\, CA 91910
