SUMMARY:Maryam Bayat: Unrolling Paradise
DESCRIPTION:The California Center for the Arts\, Escondido presents Unrolling Paradise\, an exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Maryam Bayat that examines the Persian garden as a living design tradition carried through textiles\, memory\, and everyday objects. Working at the intersection of craft and design\, Bayat transforms traditional Persian rugs into sculptural forms\, including furniture\, abstract trees\, and domestic structures that reflect on place and belonging. \n\n\n\nRaised in Tehran in a family of rug producers and now based in North County San Diego\, Bayat draws from inherited craft knowledge to reinterpret a visual language shaped by symmetry\, geometry\, and floral pattern. In Persian culture\, gardens are often understood as earthly representations of paradise; their ordered layouts are reflected in the design of carpets\, which have historically functioned as portable sanctuaries that brought the idea of paradise into the home. Bayat extends this lineage\, connecting the symbolism of the garden to personal and collective memory. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition builds on the Museum’s growing partnership with Persian Place\, a Carlsbad-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to celebrating Persian art and culture through inclusive\, multicultural programs that foster cross-cultural understanding and community connection.  \n\n\n\nThe public opening will coincide with Nowruz – Persian New Year\, co-presented with Persian Place on March 14\, 2026\, from 12–3 PM at the Museum. \n\n\n\nWhile many Persian organizations across the United States have chosen to cancel programs in response to the current situation in Iran\, the Museum and Persian Place remain committed to honoring Nowruz\, a tradition that has endured for thousands of years and continues to hold deep cultural meaning for the community. \n\n\n\nOpening March 14\, 2026\, 12pm – 3pmOn view March 14\, 2026 – August 16\, 2026\n\n\n\nCA Center for the Arts\, Escondido340 N. SUMMARY:Cafés and Cabarets: The Spectacular Art of Toulouse-Lautrec
DESCRIPTION:Known for his beguiling portraits of Paris nightlife and the unvarnished local characters of Montmartre\, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born into an aristocratic family in the South of France in 1864. Growing up as a child with a disability that caused his legs to stop developing\, Toulouse-Lautrec turned to drawing rather than the sports his family pursued. His short but celebrated career immortalized the cabaret culture of Belle Époque Paris and revolutionized the art of the poster. Working in the popular and modern art form of the color lithograph\, Toulouse-Lautrec reached unprecedented audiences with spellbinding visuals and eye-catching colors. Inspired and encouraged by Impressionists such as Edgar Degas and his close friend Vincent van Gogh\, and taking influence from the flattened color patterns of Japanese graphic arts\, Toulouse-Lautrec left an unforgettable image of the spectacle\, people\, and performers of turn-of-the-century Paris. \n\n\n\nThe San Diego Museum of Art1450 El Prado Balboa ParkSan Diego\, CA 92101

SUMMARY:Amoxtlis
DESCRIPTION:José Hugo Sánchez: Amoxtlis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmoxtlis—the Nahuatl word for “codices”—centers Sánchez’s large-scale printmaking practice\, which draws from the visual language of Mesoamerican codices while engaging the cultural and political conditions of the U.S.–Mexico border. At the heart of the installation is Codex Tonalpohualli\, a series of towering printed banners that reference the twenty day signs of the divinatory calendar of the sun. In this calendar\, time unfolds through cycles of thirteen days associated with birth and renewal. Sánchez translates this structure into an immersive environment: carved wooden codices are printed in red and black ink on monumental sheets of paper measuring sixteen feet high. Suspended from ceiling to floor\, the banners surround the viewer\, creating a dense vertical landscape that evokes a forest of signs and symbols. The exhibition also includes video work\, eight large-scale carved wooden sculptures\, and a mural created on the gallery wall during the exhibition’s run. These elements extend Sánchez’s exploration of narrative image-making across multiple forms\, from print and sculpture to moving image and architectural intervention. Throughout the installation\, references to popular culture intersect with mythic imagery and historical forms of knowledge transmission. \n\n\n\nCalifornia Center for the Arts\, Escondido340 North Escondido BoulevardEscondido\, CA 92025

SUMMARY:Cat Gunn: if only by the light of a new moon
DESCRIPTION:Cat Gunn’s first solo museum exhibition\, if only by the light of a new moon\, explores the complex terrain of inherited memory and the seemingly impossible nostalgia for a home that one has never known through materials including fabric\, ceramics\, and cyanotypes. This experience\, familiar to immigrants\, first-generation children\, and anyone displaced by colonialism\, war\, or occupation\, forms the emotional core of Gunn’s deeply personal investigation into family history. Gunn is ICA San Diego’s 2025 Artist-in-Residence.

SUMMARY:Heartmoor
DESCRIPTION:Heartmoor is a creation story\, a pursuit of love\, and a reckoning with love despised. Merging dance\, theater\, video\, and spoken word it traces primal longing\, macabre desire\, guilt\, and revenge\, threading the extraordinary into the everyday life. The work swings from irreverent comedy to mature reflective drama\, shaping taboo-shattering storytelling through fractured\, nonlinear portraits of dysfunctional desire\, memory\, and becoming. It carries a “collagist” feel that blurs the line between realism and surreal nightmare\, where unsettling vignettes emerge and dissolve without warning. One might say it is a return\, but a return to what or where is the palpable question.  \n\n\n\nSleazecore and dark romantic\, it conjures bizarre characters inside a hallucinatory landscape\, blending high energy\, multimedia\, raw performance\, dance\, music\, singing\, and pop into full sensory overload.  \n\n\n\nGuest artists will form part of this rendition of Heartmoor. \n\n\n\nLight Box Theater2590 Truxtun Rd #205San Diego\, CA 92106\n\n\n\nThis story is told both in English and Spanish.
