SUMMARY:MARSHALL TOOMEY: BLACK AMERICANA
DESCRIPTION:Marshall describes his work as autobiographical. “My own style is blended with traditional techniques to create an enriched view of the life I’ve experienced. I placed myself in the scene along with other characters from my life. I am taking a look at the positives in everyday life; the perspectives\, traditions\, and routines of being outside of the struggles.\nMy paintings represent moments in time. I aim for realism with incredible vitality—they feel almost alive. I like to paint portraits\, animals\, and food. I have always had a drive to be the best artist I could be. I continue to constantly look at the masters of art in magazines and books\, and study every cartoonist I see.\nThis first solo show is an extremely important step early in my fine art career. Telling a NEW story is my goal. Museums need a different look at history for people to see that there is always more to the story.”\nToomey’s mission is to make art for the masses. His early childhood goal was to have a successful syndicated comic strip running daily in every newspaper in the world. Although he sent hundreds of submissions to syndicates into his young adult years\, he never got picked up. Although he had to let go of that particular dream\, he never gave up on dreaming altogether and at 24-years-old he bought a one-way ticket to Hollywood\, California. Toomey went on to become a successful animator with a 40-year career as a professional artist\, including 20 years at Walt Disney Animation Studios. His credits include participation in Aladdin (1992)\, The Lion King (1994)\, The Hunchback of the Notre Dame (1996)\, and Hercules (1997). He also illustrated many books\, including The Lion King book created after the movie.\nToomey was born in 1953 and raised in Kansas City\, Missouri. He was selected for this solo exhibition as the Grand Prize winner in OMA’s 2023 Artist Alliance Biennial\, for his painting The Shop.\nOceanside Museum of Art\n704 Pier View Way\nOceanside\, CA 92054\n \n \n

SUMMARY:Becoming Betty Boop
DESCRIPTION:Betty Boop has been a cultural icon for nearly 100 years. In collaboration with Fleischer Studios\, this one-of-a-kind exhibit embarks on a nostalgic journey\, starting with Betty’s beginnings to her rise to international popularity—and what makes her a fan favorite today. First introduced in 1930\, Betty Boop was created by Max Fleischer for his “Talkartoons” series\, the world’s first animated “talkies\,” which Max’s company\, Fleischer Studios\, produced for Paramount Studios. Personifying the fabulous flappers and jazz artists of the day\, she was also the earliest animated character to be on broadcast television\, drawn live on-air by creator Max Fleischer. Also highlighted are the eight women who have voiced Betty over the years.\n\n\n\nComic-Con Museum 2131 Pan American Plaza San Diego CA 92101\n\n\n\nNow – June 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Women in Focus
DESCRIPTION:“Although the result is obtained by chemical means\, the little work it entails will greatly please ladies.” So wrote one of photography’s inventors\, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (1787–1851)\, about his eponymous daguerreotype in 1839. Daguerre’s words\, which associate women with idleness\, are clearly misogynistic. Yet in a backhanded way\, Daguerre predicted the pivotal role women would play in photography since its invention in the 1830s. Undaunted by photographic chemistry—and often neglected or derided by their male peers—women have made huge contributions to the development of the medium across a variety of genres.\n \nIn the nineteenth century\, photography was more accessible than established artistic disciplines like painting and sculpture because it was new and thus free from conventional training that historically prohibited women. It was relatively inexpensive to start and could be practiced at home with makeshift darkrooms set up in closets or bathrooms. Yet even with fewer barriers to entry\, women faced their share of constraints in a male-dominated field. Expectations of gender often dictated the themes they could pursue\, encouraging portraiture and still life rather than photographs of war and exploration.\n \nWomen took up photography in increasing numbers in the twentieth century\, and by the 1930s\, some of the most successful photographers in the world included Margaret Bourke-White\, Dorothea Lange\, and Imogen Cunningham\, all on view in this exhibition. Women in Focus\, drawn from The San Diego Museum of Art’s permanent collection (which merged with the Museum of Photographic Arts in 2023)\, allows for a fuller account of the medium’s history by highlighting how women have shaped photography from the mid-nineteenth century to today.\n \nMuseum of Photographic Arts\n@ The San Diego Museum of Art\nNash Gallery\nFebruary 1 – July 13\, 2024\n \n\n \n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:afra eisma: hush
DESCRIPTION:Through art making\, Dutch artist Afra Eisma processes her own personal trauma and creates spaces for visitors to do the same. Vibrantly colored weavings and stuffed sculptures combine with handmade ceramic elements to form new worlds where aliens\, insects\, and humans gather. Mythological beings and dreamlike places blend with body parts to create safe spaces for the full range of emotional expression. For Eisma\, her artistic practice is one of healing through feeling.\nFor Hush\, her exhibition at ICA Central—her first solo exhibition in the United States—Eisma is designing an experience inspired by the healing properties of breath. As Eisma explains\, “Breath is a tool in becoming more present; it’s a healing power for our nervous system\, a bridge between body and mind. Breath is a bodily function that we have the power to control\, or we let it take control of us.”\nEisma will design an immersive\, multi-media installation with audience participation in mind. Her participatory\, tactile installations will blow\, heave\, and gasp\, reinterpreting the sounds\, sensations\, and act of breathing. Breath is an indicator of life and can be quite intimate. This exhibition draws attention to breathing as an accessible tool for healing\, a hallmark of many wellness practices\, it is a proven stress-reducer\, resetting the link between body and mind.\nICA CENTRAL\n1439 El Prado\nSan Diego\, CA 92101\nNow – June 1\, 2025

SUMMARY:Lineage + Inheritance
DESCRIPTION:“Lineage + Inheritance” features new work from all four artists; Rushing working primarily with oil on canvas; Cornwell with a new body of hand-embellished acrylic prints on paper; Bey with paintings that feature acrylic on board; and King exploring the possibilities of wood\, metal\, yarn and textiles. Bey and King could each be described as “emerging” artists\, while Rushing and Cornwell could be described as “established” artists with multiple decades of creative practice. Each piece frames a particular generational perspective on the context of our time and on the life and liberation of Black people. Together their work responds to the idea of a Black aesthetic grounded in community participation\, artistic innovation\, and liberation – an idea that artists\, scholars\, and activists have explored across various media during the long history of Black art practices in the wider Americas.\n\nLineage + Inheritance \nMarch 7 to April 19\, 2025 \nOpening Reception:\nThursday\, March 13th 6pm-8pm \nArtist Talk:\nSunday\, April 13th 1pm-3pm\nArt Produce Gallery\nCurated by Kamaal Martin of Art\, Power\, Equity\nIn Partnership with UCSD’s Black Studies Project\n \n \n

SUMMARY:Convergence
DESCRIPTION:Convergence by Duke Windsor brings together two distinct artistic styles—textured urban abstracts and realistic alleyway scenes—to explore the raw beauty and hidden stories of city life. Through layers of paint\, rich textures\, and touches of gold leaf\, Windsor captures the interplay between gritty urban surfaces and the vibrant experiences they reflect. His detailed alleyway paintings\, inspired by thousands of photographs\, contrast with expressive abstract works\, revealing the unseen narratives within our built environment. Convergence invites viewers to consider the ways our cities shape us\, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the ever-evolving landscapes we call home.\nThe exhibition will be on view from March 8 – May 4\, with an opening reception on March 23.\n\n\nOpening Reception Details\nDate: March 23\, 2025\nHours: 5:00pm to 8:00pm\nAddress: 530 Sixth Avenue\, San Diego\, CA 92101
