SUMMARY:Becoming Betty Boop
DESCRIPTION:Betty Boop has been a cultural icon for nearly 100 years. In collaboration with Fleischer Studios\, this one-of-a-kind exhibit embarks on a nostalgic journey\, starting with Betty’s beginnings to her rise to international popularity—and what makes her a fan favorite today. First introduced in 1930\, Betty Boop was created by Max Fleischer for his “Talkartoons” series\, the world’s first animated “talkies\,” which Max’s company\, Fleischer Studios\, produced for Paramount Studios. Personifying the fabulous flappers and jazz artists of the day\, she was also the earliest animated character to be on broadcast television\, drawn live on-air by creator Max Fleischer. Also highlighted are the eight women who have voiced Betty over the years.\n\n\n\nComic-Con Museum 2131 Pan American Plaza San Diego CA 92101\n\n\n\nNow – June 2025\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Women in Focus
DESCRIPTION:“Although the result is obtained by chemical means\, the little work it entails will greatly please ladies.” So wrote one of photography’s inventors\, Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre (1787–1851)\, about his eponymous daguerreotype in 1839. Daguerre’s words\, which associate women with idleness\, are clearly misogynistic. Yet in a backhanded way\, Daguerre predicted the pivotal role women would play in photography since its invention in the 1830s. Undaunted by photographic chemistry—and often neglected or derided by their male peers—women have made huge contributions to the development of the medium across a variety of genres.\n \nIn the nineteenth century\, photography was more accessible than established artistic disciplines like painting and sculpture because it was new and thus free from conventional training that historically prohibited women. It was relatively inexpensive to start and could be practiced at home with makeshift darkrooms set up in closets or bathrooms. Yet even with fewer barriers to entry\, women faced their share of constraints in a male-dominated field. Expectations of gender often dictated the themes they could pursue\, encouraging portraiture and still life rather than photographs of war and exploration.\n \nWomen took up photography in increasing numbers in the twentieth century\, and by the 1930s\, some of the most successful photographers in the world included Margaret Bourke-White\, Dorothea Lange\, and Imogen Cunningham\, all on view in this exhibition. Women in Focus\, drawn from The San Diego Museum of Art’s permanent collection (which merged with the Museum of Photographic Arts in 2023)\, allows for a fuller account of the medium’s history by highlighting how women have shaped photography from the mid-nineteenth century to today.\n \nMuseum of Photographic Arts\n@ The San Diego Museum of Art\nNash Gallery\nFebruary 1 – July 13\, 2024\n \n\n \n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:La Llorona on the Blue Line
DESCRIPTION:La Llorona on the Blue Line by Mabelle Reynoso is an immersive play that interweaves multiple historical timelines aboard San Diego’s Blue Line trolley\, haunted by La Llorona—a spectral embodiment of maternal grief\, injustice\, and memory. Through ghostly encounters and eerie reckonings\, this immersive play invites audiences to board different train cars\, experiencing how the past lingers in unexpected ways. Here\, the Blue Line becomes a liminal space where truth surfaces and spirits seek justice to wonder if La Llorona is not a monster but a mirror—asking who the real monsters are\, and reminding us that memory cannot be shackled.\nJune 5-21\nNational City Depot\n922 W 23rd St\nNational City\, CA 91950\n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:“Visual storytelling has been apart of Kumeyaay tradition since time immemorial.”\nThe Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project is an immersive exhibition that brings the two-part comic Our\, Past\, Present\, and Future and Beyond Gaming\, written by Kumeyaay Tribal Historians Ethan Banegas\, Michael Connolly Miskwish\, Lorraine Orosco\, and Stanley Rodriguez\, to life in three dimensions.\n“Each of these two ways [comics] tells the same story\, but slightly differently. Sometimes\, having the same story told twice is the best way to learn about something that’s complicated. We want these two stories to help everyone learn more about our people\, our story and how we view the world.”\nAuthored by Tribal Historians Ethan Banegas\, Michael Connolly Miskwish\, Lorraine Orosco\, and Stanley Rodriguez\, the exhibition presents history from the perspective of Kumeyaay culture bearers and celebrates the power of visual storytelling through graphic novels. \nOn view through October 19\, 2025\nWisteria Cottage\n780 Prospect Street\nLa Jolla\, CA 92037

SUMMARY:Embracing the Mystery
DESCRIPTION:Embracing the Mystery is a juried exhibition curated by students in the Professional Practices class at Palomar College. The exhibition delves into the unsettling and unknown aspects of life\, exploring existential questions such as: What is the past? What is the future? What is consciousness? What are dreams? As Thich Nhat Hanh reminds us\, “The present moment is the only moment available to us\, and it is the door to all moments.” Life is a mystery; the only tangible reality is the ever-changing present.\nThe exhibition presents a collection of two-dimensional works — including photography\, video\, painting\, and drawing — by forty-two artists. The artists explore both internal and external landscapes\, reflecting on themes such as isolation\, exploration\, entrapment\, love\, and the human body. Works like Lina Al’s Self Love and Jim Eighmey’s Rio Frio Caves\, Belize exemplify the diverse subject matter.\nJune 14 – August 17\, 2025\nCA Center for the Arts Escondido\n340 N.
