SUMMARY:Maryam Bayat: Unrolling Paradise
DESCRIPTION:The California Center for the Arts\, Escondido presents Unrolling Paradise\, an exhibition by interdisciplinary artist Maryam Bayat that examines the Persian garden as a living design tradition carried through textiles\, memory\, and everyday objects. Working at the intersection of craft and design\, Bayat transforms traditional Persian rugs into sculptural forms\, including furniture\, abstract trees\, and domestic structures that reflect on place and belonging. \n\n\n\nRaised in Tehran in a family of rug producers and now based in North County San Diego\, Bayat draws from inherited craft knowledge to reinterpret a visual language shaped by symmetry\, geometry\, and floral pattern. In Persian culture\, gardens are often understood as earthly representations of paradise; their ordered layouts are reflected in the design of carpets\, which have historically functioned as portable sanctuaries that brought the idea of paradise into the home. Bayat extends this lineage\, connecting the symbolism of the garden to personal and collective memory. \n\n\n\nThis exhibition builds on the Museum’s growing partnership with Persian Place\, a Carlsbad-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to celebrating Persian art and culture through inclusive\, multicultural programs that foster cross-cultural understanding and community connection.  \n\n\n\nThe public opening will coincide with Nowruz – Persian New Year\, co-presented with Persian Place on March 14\, 2026\, from 12–3 PM at the Museum. \n\n\n\nWhile many Persian organizations across the United States have chosen to cancel programs in response to the current situation in Iran\, the Museum and Persian Place remain committed to honoring Nowruz\, a tradition that has endured for thousands of years and continues to hold deep cultural meaning for the community. \n\n\n\nOpening March 14\, 2026\, 12pm – 3pmOn view March 14\, 2026 – August 16\, 2026\n\n\n\nCA Center for the Arts\, Escondido340 N. SUMMARY:The Seed Keeper / El Guardián de las Semillas
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Diane Wilson’s novel The Seed Keeper\, this exhibition explores the concept of seeds as both a material presence and a powerful metaphor—an archive of memory\, resilience\, and future. Presented in collaboration with the Oceanside Public Library as part of the community-wide program The Big Read\, the exhibition extends the novel’s themes into a visual and spatial experience. In Indigenous worldviews\, seeds carry more than sustenance; they hold stories\, languages\, ancestral knowledge\, and responsibilities passed orally from generation to generation. \n\n\n\nThrough diverse materials and practices\, these Native American female artists act as contemporary seed keepers by preserving stories\, traditions\, and ways of knowing that have survived displacement\, erasure\, and transformation. Their works speak to continuity rather than nostalgia\, emphasizing living cultures rooted in care\, reciprocity\, and resistance. \n\n\n\nExhibition Celebration: Tuesday\, April 7\, 5:30-7:00pm.On view March 27 – June 21Oceanside Museum of Art704 Pier View WayOceanside\, CA 92054

SUMMARY:Cafés and Cabarets: The Spectacular Art of Toulouse-Lautrec
DESCRIPTION:Known for his beguiling portraits of Paris nightlife and the unvarnished local characters of Montmartre\, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was born into an aristocratic family in the South of France in 1864. Growing up as a child with a disability that caused his legs to stop developing\, Toulouse-Lautrec turned to drawing rather than the sports his family pursued. His short but celebrated career immortalized the cabaret culture of Belle Époque Paris and revolutionized the art of the poster. Working in the popular and modern art form of the color lithograph\, Toulouse-Lautrec reached unprecedented audiences with spellbinding visuals and eye-catching colors. Inspired and encouraged by Impressionists such as Edgar Degas and his close friend Vincent van Gogh\, and taking influence from the flattened color patterns of Japanese graphic arts\, Toulouse-Lautrec left an unforgettable image of the spectacle\, people\, and performers of turn-of-the-century Paris. \n\n\n\nThe San Diego Museum of Art1450 El Prado Balboa ParkSan Diego\, CA 92101

SUMMARY:LUX
DESCRIPTION:Light. Peace. Transcendence.  \n\n\n\nSan Diego Master Chorale returns to St. James by-the-Sea in La Jolla and St. Paul’s Cathedral with LUX — a powerful choral program anchored by Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein and Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen. Featuring organist Martin Green\, this program moves from urgency to stillness\, tracing a journey from conflict to transcendence. Bernstein’s electrifying psalm settings pulse with rhythm and raw questions of unity\, while Lauridsen’s luminous meditation on eternal light offers moments of deep calm and reflection. Surrounding these masterworks are vivid and contrasting voices: Dorchester Canticles by Tarik O’Regan\, alive with rhythmic vitality and radiant energy\, and a Shaker song of simple\, grounded peace. Performed in the resonant acoustics of two of San Diego’s most beautiful sacred spaces\, LUX is more than a concert — it is an immersive experience of sound\, stillness\, and light. \n\n\n\nSATURDAY\, April 11\, 2026\, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral2728 Sixth Ave.San Diego\, CA 92101\n\n\n\nSUNDAY\, April 12\, 2026\, 4:00 PM – 6:00 PMSt. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church743 Prospect StLa Jolla\, CA 92037

SUMMARY:Elvira Notari: Beyond Silence
DESCRIPTION:Elvira Notari: Beyond Silence is a feature documentary chronicling the life and work of Elvira Notari (1875-1946)\, Italy’s first woman film director. Despite directing hundreds of silent films that captivated from Naples to New York\, Elvira was relegated to the margins of film history for half a century. Her films\, poised between realism and staged drama\, were deeply rooted in Neapolitan folklore. A woman in a man’s world\, her works were targeted by Fascist censorship yet found the embrace of audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. The documentary interweaves voices of those who celebrate her legacy today – from the experts who rediscovered her films to contemporary artists reimagining her vision through new works – to resurrect Elvira’s singular vision. More than a biography\, Elvira Notari: Beyond Silence is a portrait of an artist who continues to inspire new creative pathways. \n\n\n\nDigital Gym CINEMA1100 Market StSan Diego\, CA 92101April 15\, 20267:00 – 9:00 PM PDT

SUMMARY:German Currents Kino: Mirrors No. 3
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis: In the haunting new film from esteemed German director Christian Petzold (Transit\, NYFF56)\, his regular star Paula Beer plays Laura\, a pianist from Berlin who finds herself in a transitory state. After surviving a violent car crash that kills her boyfriend\, Laura is immediately taken in by Betty (Barbara Auer)\, a mysterious middle-aged woman who lives alone in an isolated house in the countryside. Strangers to one another\, the two women build a quiet\, respectful life together\, though the reemergence of Betty’s estranged husband and son sheds light on the tragic past that explains the murky present. The pleasurable enigma of Miroirs No. 3\, named for a Ravel piano suite\, returns Petzold to the metaphysical ambiguity of earlier films like Yella (2007) and the themes of doubling in his cherished Phoenix (2014)\, yet with a distinctive ethereality all its own: It’s an economical and beautifully crafted work about the mystery of human interaction. \n\n\n\nShowtimes:Friday\, April 17\, 2026: 7:00 (GC Screening)Saturday\, April 18\, 2026:Sunday\, April 19 2026: 3:00 (GC Screening)Monday\, April 20 2026:Tuesday\, April 21\, 2026:Wednesday\, April 22 \, 2026:Thursday\, April 23\, 2026: \n\n\n\nTicket Prices: $13 Regular / $11 Students & Seniors / $9 MembersTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqNG8EWydW0  \n\n\n\nDigital Gym Cinema1100 Market StSan Diego\, CA 92101

SUMMARY:Celestial Bodies: Moons+Marguerite Brown
DESCRIPTION:Sound artist Marguerite Brown opens the evening with an exploration of the electric guitar as a celestial body\, using planetary tuning forks\, custom hardware\, and extended performance techniques to reveal new resonances and cosmic frequencies. Her work invites listeners to consider sound as both vibration and matter\, connecting the earthly and the astronomical. Following Brown\, the bi-coastal quartet MOONS —Judith Berkson\, Laura Cetilia\, Katie Porter\, and Christine Tavolacci — presents a set of new compositions born from years of collaboration in experimental music. Their performances traverse chamber textures\, electroacoustic landscapes\, and subtle improvisations\, creating music that is intimate\, exploratory\, and richly detailed. Together\, Brown and MOONS offer an evening that bridges the cosmic and the deeply intimate. \n\n\n\nAPR 17\, 2026\, 7:30 PMBREAD & SALT GALLERY1955 Julian AveSan Diego\, CA 92113
