SUMMARY:Palpitations: The Cadence of Heartbeats
DESCRIPTION:Marianela de la Hoz and Marc Urselli / Palpitations: The Cadence of Heartbeats\nPalpitations is an immersive installation born from the collaboration of painter Marianela de la Hoz and Grammy Award-winning sound artist Marc Urselli. Departing from her signature miniatures\, de la Hoz paints speaker cones in acrylics and mixed media\, each emitting Urselli’s soundscapes composed directly in response to her imagery. The works\, centered on the beating heart as a life force\, explore birth\, death\, war\, and hope—fragility met with resilience. SUMMARY:Alfredo Castañeda: Beyond Surrealism
DESCRIPTION:Alfredo Castañeda: Beyond Surrealism brings together thirty-five paintings from outstanding private collections in North America and Spain for the first museum retrospective of the artist’s work in the United States. The exhibition covers five decades of the artist’s wide-ranging international career and his unique exploration of Surrealist themes through deeply personal iconography and distinctive visual narrative.\nAlfredo Castañeda (Mexico City\, 1938-2010\, Madrid) was one of the most prolific and impactful champions of the Surrealist movement in Latin America and in the later twentieth century. While training as an architect at the National University of Mexico\, he studied with Mattias Goeritz\, whose work inspired him to expand his art practice to include painting. Castañeda had practiced drawing since childhood\, but he was further encouraged by an encounter with René Magritte’s work. Marked by introspection\, psychological investigation\, whimsy\,\nand an acutely self-aware sense of humor\, Castañeda’s paintings have a magical realist quality and high degree of visual finish. Many scenes feature trompe l’oeil effects that call into question the artist’s trustworthiness as a narrator\, as the realism the viewer sees is often at odds with the absurdities of what the artist chooses to represent. Themes of family\, self\, identity\, and journey are all at the forefront of this striking artist’s visual vocabulary.\nSeptember 6\, 2025–March 1\, 2026\nThe San Diego Museum of Art\n1450 El Prado\nBalboa Park\, San Diego\, CA

SUMMARY:Future Rituals
DESCRIPTION:Future Rituals is an exhibition that invites us to imagine a time when insects\, birds and all animals are precious to humanity. These works serve as rituals of appreciation and spiritual connection with the system of life and energies that surround us. Not so long ago\, ancient civilizations would venerate animals and the forces of nature\, living a life more in balance with the ecosystem. Combining ancestral knowledge and artmaking techniques such as ceramics and drawing\, along with contemporary media such as digital audio or digital photography\, Future Rituals asks the viewer to take step back\, slow down\, and listen to the insects\, the birds\, and the spirit. \n\n\n\nOceanside Museum of Art704 Pier View WayOceanside\, CA 92054

SUMMARY:Reimagining La Linea
DESCRIPTION:Responding to issues affecting our region\, our Fall 2025 Museum Studies class has juried\, curated\, and installed Reimagining La Linea\, an exhibition about migration which highlights the work of thirty artists and two collectives. Migration has been a vital force in the shaping our country\, and the San Diego/Tijuana region clearly exemplifies this: a diverse community alive with layered cultures\, languages\, and traditions from all around the globe. \nThe border wall or “La Linea\,” intended as an impenetrable boundary\, also reveals itself as porous\, with the highest number of lawful daily crossings of any other US port of entry. The artwork bears witness to the human condition at the border as well as to the journeys and dreams carried across it. The exhibition challenged artists to imagine an alternative future where boundaries are fluid sites of connection rather than division. SUMMARY:Race: Power\, Resistance & Change
DESCRIPTION:“Colors“ (detail) by Hugo Crosthwaite\, 2025. Stop-motion animation (drawing-based). \nThe exhibition Race: Power\, Resistance & Change shares stories of how the construction of race has shaped laws\, institutions\, and daily life in San Diego and the broader multinational region. Presented in English and Spanish\, the exhibition highlights key moments in this region’s complex history of race. Race: Power\, Resistance & Change is an invitation and a call to action. It is a space to reflect\, connect personal experiences\, and take part in ongoing conversations about racial justice and building a more equitable future together.\nThe Museum of US\n1350 El Prado\nSan Diego\, CA 92101

SUMMARY:CINEMATHEK: Goodbye\, Dragon Inn
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Pacific Arts Movement\, producers of the San Diego Asian Film Festival. \n\n\n\nSynopsis: Like the Royal Theater in The Last Picture Show and the title movie house in Cinema Paradiso\, the Fu-Ho is shutting down for good. The Fu-Ho’s valedictory screening is King Hu’s 1967 wuxia epic Dragon Inn\, playing to a motley smattering of spectators. The standard grievances persist: patrons snack noisily and remove their shoes\, treating this temple of cinema like their living room. The sense that moviegoing as a communal experience is slipping away takes on a powerful and painful resonance. Yet Tsai Ming-liang’s Goodbye\, Dragon Inn is too multifaceted to collapse into a simple valentine to the age of pre-VOD cinephilia. A minimalist where King Hu was a maximalist\, preferring long\, static shots and sparse use of dialogue\, Tsai rises to the narrative challenges he sets for himself and offers the slyest\, most delicate of character arcs (the manager\, a woman with an iron brace on her leg\, embarks on a torturous odyssey to deliver food to the projectionist\, played by Lee Kang-sheng). By the time the possibility arises that the theater is haunted\, we’ve already identified it as a space outside of time—indeed\, two stars of Hu’s original opus\, Miao Tien and Shih Chun\, watch their younger selves with tears in their eyes\, past and present commingling harmoniously and poignantly. \n\n\n\nShowtimes:Thursday\, December 11\, 2025: 7:00 \n\n\n\nTicket Prices: $13 Regular / $11 Students & Seniors / $9 MembersTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiDI-F0jvAo

SUMMARY:Burnout Paradise
DESCRIPTION:After a hit run at WOW Festival 2025\, Burnout Paradise returns to La Jolla Playhouse for one week only in December. Buzz about this show spread far and wide earlier this year — people clambered to get tickets\, dragged their friends back for more\, even tried to sneak in once it was sold out! The competition to get a seat rivalled the chaos unfolding on stage. Don’t wait to get your tickets — it will sell out again!  Four performers mount four treadmills. What begins as a simple wager between performers and audience becomes a frantic attempt to complete a series of escalating tasks that test the limits of the performers’ bodies\, spirits and minds.\nThis is not an endurance feat. Nor is it performance art. It is an unraveling realization that the system we participate in is not designed for us. A delusional and physical celebration of our collective struggle to establish clear boundaries in our lives. And it’s hilarious.\nAustralia’s Pony Cam is known for bold\, high-energy performances that blur the lines between theatre and physical endurance. Their work is evocative and unflinching\, earning them a reputation as one of the most exciting experimental theatre companies of their generation.\nBurnout Paradise is an international hit — audiences from Melbourne to Edinburgh to New York rave that it’s one of the most fun theatre experiences they’ve had.
