LOVE, LOSS & WHAT I WORE

Women, clothes and memories…

Article by Alejandra Enciso Guzmán

Playhouse Productions Inc. brings this unique story to the San Diego stage. A group that produces many shows around the U.S. and has been in San Diego County for many years, came upon Love, Loss & What I Wore in 2014 with John Anderson, San Diego Repertory Theatre’s Production Manager who has also directed shows for Playhouse Productions such as Old Jews Telling Jokes.

A copy of the script was found at the REP, Anderson read it and thought “This is the kind of story that I am sure audiences are going to like”. Even though the group was surprised when he suggested the staging, the idea found support. The cast is comprised of 5 local actresses: Melinda Gilb, Deanna Driscoll, Jacole Kitchen, Rachael VanWormer and Elsa Martinez. “Some of the people in the show are my favorite people. I’ve got five of the best storytellers in San Diego, ready to tell these stories. It is going to be fantastic and I will to try to stay out of the way as much as I can” shared John in  an interview with Vanguard Culture.

Written by Nora and Delia Ephron, based on the 1995 book of the same name by Ilene Beckerman; the show uses clothing, accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories that all women can relate to, creating an enduring a theater-going experience. “Audiences can expect very truthful stories about women… successes and mistakes they made that will make them smile, laugh and –we think- probably cry. I am a man, and I enjoy it every time I read it. I have two grandmothers, three aunts, two sisters, I have a wife, a mother in law and a mother. I am –not- cut off from the world of women” he concluded. Rehearsals for the piece began last Saturday. Previews start Tuesday, February 25th, opening night is Saturday, February 27th with performances until Sunday, March 22nd.

The Off Broadway hit opened at the Westside Theatre in 2009, where it broke all box office records. Since Love, Loss & What I Wore opened, audiences around the globe have gotten the chance to experience it. The show has been produced in six continents and more than eight countries. It began a national tour in the United States in September 2011 in Chicago. It made an encore performance in Paris in January 2012. Los Angeles’ Geffen Theatre and Chicago’s Broadway Playhouse both hosted extended runs. Deemed “Witty and Wise” by Vanity Fair, and “Funny and Compelling” by The New York Times. Love, Loss & What I Wore is produced by Playhouse Productions Inc. – Philip Roger Roy and Dana Matthow currently in NYC, with the hit comedy: My Son The Waiter, A Jewish Tragedy!, and on National Tour, they are producing You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up!, My Mother’s Italian, My Father’s Jewish & I’m In Therapy!
