The UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts and the Experimental Drawing Studio initiative present POSEUR, a group show by MFA candidate and Los Angeles-based artist Kara Joslyn and Mexico City-based collaborators SANGREE, (René Godínez Pozas and Carlos Lara). This is the second iteration of the exhibition, which was originally installed this year at LAND AND SEA, an Oakland based project space founded by Chris Duncan and Maria Otero. The colloquial use of the term “poseur” denotes a poor imitation or pretense of originality, often insufficient to pass as the original but satisfactory enough to extend the phenomenological life of the symbol. Through a process of replication, artists Joslyn and SANGREE respectively challenge longstanding cultural orientation to and the authority of symbols and objects by detaching them (as replicas) from their conventional associations. The sculptural and two-dimensional paintings in the exhibition demonstrate differentiation, by material and scale manipulation, where uniformity is expected.
