10 REASONS WHY AMERICAN MARIACHI WAS THE SHOW TO SEE

Article by Miguel Gongora Jr.

Top ten reasons why American Mariachi at the Old Globe was the show to see this week:

  • The show is visually stunning. From the acting to the lighting, sound, and costume design, there is an elegant beauty in the way each element is in perfect pitch with each other.
  • Scenic Designer, Regina Garcia deserves her own mention. My highest praise for delighting us with the dream-inspired portrait she creates on stage.
  • The story is poetically framed through the journey of trailblazing mujeres who founded the first-ever all-women-mariachi. Who wouldn’t be down to see women kicking some patriarchal butt?!
  • Experience for yourself why the directorial vision of James Vasquez is one of San Diego’s greatest cultural resources.
  • You can use the themes of memory, love, and loss as a platform to share something about yourself or ask something you’ve always wanted to know about your date.
  • “Born from the ashes of la conquista, mariachi music is memory…it gives fuel to life.” Playwright José Cruz González has woven a poetic narrative that is both deeply personal and universal in scope.
  • Learn something new about the history and place of mariachi music for what will soon be the largest minority in the U.S.A.
  • After you see this show, you will understand why mariachi music is the spiritual anthem of Mexicans – anywhere.
  • Transformation comes from taking ourselves out of our comfort zone and listening to yourself and others. It was inspiring to see diversity in the audience. Dare yourself to be moved and go see this show.
  • It closes April 29.
