… And this time they’ll travel from downtown’s Waterfront Park to the eclectic beauty of Balboa Park engaging the public with outstanding choreography, original ideas and unforgettable findings.

The Trolley Dances are known for their performances in the most unexpected places and this year is no exception. Just a teaser – the first dance is happening in a fountain to the accompaniment of syncronized water splashes.

The idea of taking dance out of a conventional theatre stage to the urban setting belongs to Jean Isaacs, the Director of the San Diego Dance Theatre. She came up with the idea back in 1999 and since then the event has presented in San Diego, San Francisco, Stockton, and Riverside. In 2015, this format allowed such prominent choreographers as Mark Haim, Stephen Koplowitz, Anne Gehman, Jean Isaacs, and Suzanne Forbes-Vierling to explore a human body, its flexibility and its movement by contrasting and adjusting it to motionless architectural surroundings. All the dances vary greatly in styles and ideas which makes the whole event even more attractive to the public – anyone can see something they might enjoy.

One of the performances took place in Balboa Park’s Spanish Village. The location itself has a spirit of joy and celebration with its multi-colored tiles, bright signs and crafting spirit. With the rhythm of Argentinean tango you are carried away to La Boca neighborhood in Buenos Aires. Through the elements of tango the dance evolves along an alley where the choreographer wittingly plays with the architecture of the Mediterranean-looking village, sunlight, and motion. Everything in the performance – movements, music, the cyclist riding a bike, the girl walking a dog, the dancers swaying from one side of the alley to another, the place, and even the burning sun create the charming atmosphere of cheerfulness and nonchalance.
