In this special episode of ART SHOP TALK, Vanguard Culture’s documentarian Anna Guillotte visits the studio of multidisciplinary artist Ana Maria Herrera, whose work explores identity, migration, and cultural coexistence in the San Diego–Tijuana border region.
From Herrera’s creative studio to the junkyards of Tijuana, this short documentary follows the artist’s process of collecting discarded materials and transforming them into powerful mixed-media assemblages. Rusted metal, weathered wood, fibers, and found objects become vessels for memory—telling stories about the border, displacement, and the shared human experience.
Herrera’s work blends sculpture, photography, and assemblage to create layered pieces that invite reflection, empathy, and dialogue about identity, migration, and cultural connection.
Through this intimate look at her creative practice, viewers witness how overlooked objects gain new life as art—revealing the hidden histories embedded in everyday materials.
