Love, Laughter and Loss Explained Through Dance

Article by Alejandra Enciso Guzmán

This weekend Jean Isaacs San Diego Dance Theater, returned to the Weiss Theater on the UCSD campus for three days of dance. The World premiere entitled “Pillow Case” where 10 numbers comprise the first act. A mix of spoken word, music and choreography. Pillow Case will resonate with everybody, talking about past loves, mistakes…life. Real stories by real people whose names where respectfully omitted.

Written and guided through the words of poet, performer and professor Meagan Marshall, it is like being in a parallel universe where things happen but, are seen from a distance at the same time that they are being understood one by one. Nick Crosby, writer and comedian, also guides the audience through the spoken word and taps into a little choreography.

Feel free to belt out Sinead O’Connor’s big hit as you enjoy PILLOW CASE No. 56753 “Nothing Compares” intensely performed by Trystan Loucado and Ariana Siegel.

“Inside the Actors Studio” was for me, the second best Pillow Case out of the series, where an actual pillow case (Meagan Marshall) is interviewed and explains its peeks and pits.

“One Night Stand” illustrates both sides of the coin –at the same time- while Meagan and Nick welcome the audience into their story of the onetime venture.

“The Atlantic Man” is part of the second act, originally created and presented at UCSD and the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. It has not been presented in its entirety since. The work is based on a radio play by French writer and filmmaker Marguerite Duras. With backdrop video and Peggy Johnston playing cello as a first step into the piece, you are taken once again into a parallel universe, but this time it is your own. Getting in touch with one’s inner self, fears and lost memories. Going back to reality and guided by a wonderfully performed sequence led majestically by Jeremy Zapanta.

All choreography is by Jean Isaacs, who taught dance at UCSD for 25 years. Dancers include: Blythe Barton, John Diaz, Trystan Loucado, Minaqua McPherson, Erica Ruse, Zaquia Mahler Salinas, Ariana Siegel, Kyle Sorensen, Shannon Snyder and Jeremy Zapanta.
