VIDEO ART | REGIONAL CONTEXT | MULTIDISCIPLINARY | LINGUISTIC CODING
The Mexico/US border region (a nexus of cultural, political, technological, and creative energy) is in a state of continual flux. Artists Perry Vásquez and Lianne Thompson-Mueller will distill this situation into the form of an immersive outdoor audio/visual projection titled Mexus Nexus Fluxus, set “inside” of an authentic Mexican Coffee House. The video art projection will feature animated wallpaper à la razquache set to a Mexican radio “broadcast” of Chicano elevator music versions of classic songs like Cielito Lindo, La Llorona, and Oye Como Va. Drawing from the vast Herman Baca Archive at UCSD, and other sources, the artists will fabricate a tapestry of sound and vision that explores the history and culture of San Diego’s Mexican American neighborhoods from Barrio Logan to National City and beyond.
