OPINION: The Power of Art, Culture, and Youth: Building a More Creative and Connected World

Art isn’t just about painting or performing—it’s about seeing the world differently, telling stories that matter, and building bridges between people. Culture gives us a shared language of values and identity, whether it’s expressed through music, film, fashion, sports, or local traditions.

Around the world, young people are using creativity to speak out and spark change: (1) Street artists are turning city walls into messages of hope. (2) Kids are using lyrics to challenge injustice. (3) Young filmmakers are telling the stories that mainstream media ignores. (4)  Our teens need to be intimately involved in community projects that combine art, gardening, and public space to bring neighbors together.

These are not small acts—they are powerful steps toward making communities stronger and more united.

We live in a time of uncertainty—politically, socially. If we give young people the tools, opportunities, and freedom they deserve, they can build a future that is more creative, more connected, and more compassionate than anything we’ve seen before.

That future depends on reimagining what we teach, how we govern, and how every part of society—from businesses to nonprofits to neighborhoods—works together. It also depends on understanding that creativity and culture aren’t luxuries. They are the foundation of strong communities and a vibrant world.

Too often, schools still focus on memorizing facts, taking tests, and following rigid rules. While these skills have their place, they can limit imagination. Students rarely get the chance to explore their ideas, express themselves through art or music, or connect their studies to real-life problems in their communities.

Meanwhile, the world young people are stepping into is far from simple. They face climate change, economic instability, inequality, racial injustice, and rapid technological change. These challenges can feel overwhelming, but they also create an urgent need for creative problem-solving, and that’s where art and culture play a vital role.

If we want this generation to thrive, education has to change. Schools should be places where:

  • Creativity and innovation are as important as math and science.
  • Students learn by working on real-world problems in their communities.
  • Arts programs are central, not optional.
  • Cultural understanding is taught alongside history and technology.
  • Ethical thinking guides how we use new tools like artificial intelligence and biotechnology.

Imagine every city having “creative hubs” where students and community members could work together on art projects, business ideas, and solutions to local challenges. These spaces could become launching pads for both personal growth and social change.

While new technologies—AI, robotics, brain-computer interfaces—can help solve problems, they are only tools. Without creativity, cultural understanding, and shared values, technology can just as easily divide as unite. That’s why education must teach empathy, storytelling, and the ability to see the world from someone else’s perspective.

This is a responsibility for all of us to support local artists, preserve cultural traditions, and make space for new voices to be heard.

The challenges ahead are real. But so is the potential of the next generation. If we nurture their creativity and respect their cultural voices, we can build a future that is more just, more sustainable, and more beautiful than the one we inherited.
