What evil lurks in the hearts of men is the key question of North Coast Repertory’s latest production: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In this head-turning drama, good and evil are turned on their heads. And we, the audience, are given a dazzling display of fine acting at whipsaw speed.
Who is Dr. Henry Jekyll? A good doctor? Or a murderer? Who is Mr. Edward Hyde? A cruel killer? Or a haunted lover? We can’t tell you more without risking ruining your night at the theater. But be forewarned, you will have lots to talk about– or dream about– afterward!
Adapted by Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher and furiously directed by Shana Wride, the play puts the small and talented cast through multiple roles and scene changes at breakneck speed. These actors– all with impressive bios on stage and screen– are more than up to the challenge!
The standout cast includes Bruce Turk as Dr. Jekyll, Conner Marx as Edward Hyde and Dr. Lanyan; Ciarra Stroud as Elizabeth and Katie MacNichol and Jacob Bruce in numerous roles throughout.
With minimal costume changes and minor set alterations, the cast needed to instantly– and constantly– create atmosphere, emotional connection and mystery. As the show progressed, the story arc brought us deeper into the quagmire at the drama’s heart. Who is evil? Who is good? How do we know and how do we feel in the face of both?
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is a psychological murder mystery that delivers a punch. North Coast Repertory clearly knows that they have a hit on their hands. They extended the play’s run until November 19. Find out why for yourself!
