MESOAMERICAN | DANCE | SACRED RITUALS | SPIRITUAL SYMBOLISM |
Referring to the intangible collective memory and experiences of our ancestors, Ancestral Memory uses contemporary dance to create a ceremonial scene from Mesoamérica including Guatemala, Southern Mexico, and the rest of Central America. This piece taps into the ancestral memory of the Mesoamerican culture by honoring elements such as cosmology, sacred rituals, and spiritual symbolism. The performance invites viewers to consider Humanity’s relationship with the unseen spiritual world around us. In the architecture of Mesoamerican temples, the stairs symbolized the connection between the earthly realm and the divine. Climbing the stairs represented a spiritual ascent, which allowed the faithful to reach sacred spaces and communicate with the gods. The staircases, their arrangement, and accompanying carvings or sculptures often had symbolic meanings related to cosmology, myth, and the cycle of time.
Choreography by Patricia Maldonado with featured dancers from San Diego and Tijuana Fernando Gallaga, Gonzalo Rodríguez and Diane Campaña Rodríguez. Featuring original music by Paulo Alvarado (Guatemala). Costume design by Fernando Gallaga & Patricia Maldonado.
