San Diego International Fringe Fest took place in May and served up a delicious smorgasbord of creativity. And as a confirmed fringe geek I decided to head north to Hollywood to discover some more uncensored creativity at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. The festival closes this weekend but there are still a ton of shows to check out.
In terms of uncensored creativity, I don’t think you could find two better examples than a pair of award-winning shows from Australia: Sophie Power’s “CVNT” and Claire Robin’s “Nun Slut.” The titles alone are enough to make some clutch their pearls so of course that made both shows go to the top of my list. Here’s a little preview of their work and both shows have final performances this Saturday.
“CVNT” explores a word and a body part with reckless abandon and humor. Power’s description of her show states: “A wild, unhinged, hilarious and interactive exploration of everything CVNTY led by a giant, sexy vulva. Is the worst word in English really CVNT? …Or is it Can’t?”
Robin’s show “Nun Slut” serves up an absurd journey through religion, the body and Barnaby Joyce. It’s a raucous mash-up of clown, sketch and cabaret.
Check out this video preview.
My other top recommendations for the weekend include: “Something Spooky” (sold out but check for stand by ticketing), “Nilbog! The Troll 2 Musical,” “Maniac,” “Lady M,” “Bone Lady,” “Black Bag Job,” “Out for Delivery” and “This Show is Canceled: Due to the End of the World.” But this is just a tiny sample of the dozens of shows still left to check out and enjoy.
You can also check out a pair of shows that premiered at San Diego International Fringe and are now getting a second run at Hollywood Fringe. Here are the teaser videos for “Lady Satan” and “Don’t Kill Daisy.”
So if you are feeling adventuresome and eager for something fresh and exciting, then head to Hollywood Fringe this weekend.
