The Ascend Project
The ASCEND Project is a work-study program that provides advanced training in dance for young adults without the economic means to do so. Designed and facilitated by Peter G. Kalivas, and The PGK Dance Project in partnership with The Kroc Center and Malcolm X Library & Performing Arts Center, this program empowers young adults and makes them feel valuable and connected as equal members of society.
Since September 2014 students have performed for the PGK’s “Mediterranean Nights” at Centro Cultural de la Raza and for The Make A Wish Foundation, volunteered at AIDS Walk with the PGK team, and guest performed at The Kroc Center’s Holiday show. Students will also train with several guest teacher/choreographers through the year, learn how to develop strategic business plans, and appear at Dance on the EDGE for Mission Federal Credit Union’s ArtWalk in April 2015.
“Learning Life” through Movement
Being a creative, intention driven person fosters self-awareness, connection to humanity, critical thinking, and inspires ascending beyond limits. Through 10 – 12 week sessions, once a week for 1.5 hours this group receives intensive, meaningful training in contemporary dance technique, followed by an additional hour in choreography with Peter G. Kalivas, Artistic Director of The PGK Dance Project. Rigor, regiment, and working within a Universal system teaches respect and appreciation of structure and explores relating and working with others within a framework. Tasking individuals with roles and responsibilities promotes leadership, belonging and expectation.
