THE BUZZ: San Diego Theatre Month: Celebrate the Vibrancy of Performing Arts (At A Discount)

by Kristen Schweizer

March 10, 2024

San Diego, known nationwide as an incubator for bold new work and fresh talent, is opening its curtains for its ninth annual San Diego Theatre Month. During March, tickets to all participating theaters are priced at $15, $30, or $45 and are conveniently accessible through one unified platform.

At the heart of this celebration is a spirit of unity among San Diego’s performing arts community. On the local news, Jay Henslee, President of the San Diego Performing Arts League (SDPAL), and local gem Kandace Crystal emphasize the goal of Theatre Month: to invite audiences to partake in the richness and diversity of San Diego’s cultural tapestry. “San Diego has sent more shows to Broadway than any other city in America,” Henslee declared. “Theatre Month is our invitation for audiences to experience the magic firsthand.”

My standout pick is the uproarious Hand to God, presented by Roustabout Theatre Co. The irreverent Tony-nominated play about a Christian Ministry puppet possessed by the devil promises to captivate audiences with its dark humor and light-shedding truths. Tickets are $30.

For younger audiences, San Diego Junior Theatre presents “Puffs,” a clever and witty take on the magical world of wizards. With its smart script and engaging storyline, “Puffs” is ideal for the whole family—especially at $15 a seat.

Meanwhile, CCAE Theatricals—resident theatre at the gorgeous California Center for the Arts, Escondido—continue to dazzle audiences with award-winning musicals, showcasing top-tier local talent and high production value. It’s a steal to see Motown: The Groove that Changed America in the Center’s 1,500-seat concert hall for $45.

With over 30 participating organizations, including Broadway San Diego, San Diego State’s School of Theatre, Television, and Film, and Genesis Opera Theatre, San Diego Theatre Month offers a cornucopia of diverse delight—from ballet to improv comedy— for every taste and preference.

From Escondido to the Silver Strand, the vibrant cultural landscape of San Diego awaits exploration. As Theatre Month unfolds, audiences are invited to go behind the scenes with exclusive Instagram takeovers from participating organizations. Follow the official San Diego Performing Arts League Instagram page (@sdperformingartsleague) for backstage glimpses. For additional inquiries and assistance, contact [email protected] or call 619-234-ARTS.

Sidenote: Why isn’t there one website that conveniently lists all of San Diego’s live theatre performances all year long? Seriously, this should exist. Someone tell Mayor Todd Gloria.
