2020 THE FORUM: Independent Contractors & AB5

 INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS AND AB5

Since its passing, AB5 has been a hot topic for most small businesses, non profits, and  the arts community. Join California Lawyers for the Arts San Diego and  VANGUARD CULTURE for a lunch time workshop featuring local attorneys Sam Mazzeo and Olivia Phillips where we’ll discuss the impacts of AB5, independent contractor classification, and what we have learned thus far.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

A Better Professional Corporation (or “Better” for short) is a small but mighty law firm based out of East Village. Why Better? Because we believe that we’re better together. We believe that our clients deserve better than cookie cutter services. And we believe in being better than we were yesterday. We focus on early stage companies, but we can help at any stage of the legal journey. We want to be proactive with our clients, to set them up for a better future and to make a meaningful impact. To us, there’s nothing better than that.

Sam Mazzeo:  Sam is a modern-day Renaissance man. He helps our clients better understand legal matters like trademark, business formation & securities, and contracts. Sam’s experience spans from serving as In-House Legal Counsel for the film-based nonprofit Invisible Children, to starting a few businesses of his own (Better and 5 Minute Lawyer are his newest endeavors), to helping co-found the local nonprofit Business for Good San Diego. When he’s not working with clients, he’s volunteering, creating, traveling, or zipping around town on his electric bike or scooter.

Olivia Phillips: Liv is a Jane of all trades, working on mastering them all. She helps our clients better understand legal matters like labor & employment, contracts, and copyright. She holds an HR certification through The Society for Human Resource Management, and she’s also our in-house doodler, creating fun graphics and GIFs to help explain some of the more complicated answers to our clients’ legal questions. She sits on the board of Slow Food Urban San Diego, and when she’s not geeking out about cooking, she’s hiking, knitting, or spending quality time with her family.

This event is part of Vanguard Culture’s FORUM Professional Development series, designed to support San Diego’s Creative Industries. Our programs range from workshops to panel discussions, to networking opportunities and are designed to educate participants on the business behind their industry. Participants not only make valuable connections with other creatives, but they are also provided with tools, tips, and tricks to help them make a living doing what they love. The FORUM is made possible thanks to our generous Professional Development Sponsor Jack Lampl.

Vanguard Culture is an inclusive 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to advancing San Diego’s Creative Industries.
