The Space Between Words: Featuring Works by Jon Savage, Ale Uzarraga, Kelvin Lopez, and Jess Bergman

Language is more than something we speak.

It is something we carry, remember, lose, invent, and share…

The Space Between Words brings together the work of Jon Savage, Ale Uzarraga, Kelvin Lopez, and Jess Bergman, four artists whose practices explore the many ways we communicate when words alone are not enough.

At the heart of the exhibition is Jon Savage’s The Art of Language, a vibrant series that transforms American Sign Language, English, and visual expression into a unified body of work. His work invites viewers to consider language not only as something we hear, but as something we see, experience, and feel.

For Tijuana-based artist Ale Uzarraga, communication is shaped by language, memory, and distance. Her series Feel and Create reflects on the subtle shifts between English and Spanish while offering quiet meditations on thoughts left unspoken to someone no longer in her life. Through photographs and text, memory itself becomes a form of conversation.

Kelvin Lopez builds visual narratives rooted in printmaking, family, self-care, and cultural identity. Incorporating flowers grown in his own garden alongside embroidered elements created by respected elders in his family, his layered compositions draw parallels between nurturing the natural world and caring for ourselves. His work reminds us that growth, resilience, and belonging all flourish through intentional care.

Jess Bergman, whose career as a vocalist was forever changed by unilateral vocal fold paralysis, turned to visual art as a new form of expression. His work reflects on loss, mental health, identity, and the ongoing process of redefining purpose, offering a deeply personal meditation on resilience and the transformative power of creativity.

Though their practices differ, these artists share a belief that communication extends far beyond speech. Their work reminds us that meaning can be found in images, gestures, texture, memory, and mark-making, and that art has the remarkable ability to connect us across languages, experiences, and perspectives.

Presented by Vanguard Culture ARTS LAB at UC San Diego Park & Market, The Space Between Words invites visitors to slow down, look closely, and discover the conversations unfolding all around us. Some are spoken. Others can only be seen or felt.
