FLOWERPOTS | COMMUNITY | EXPERIMENTATION | TOGETHERNESS | MUSIC
Flowerpot Music is a duo piece with a significant element of audience participation using commonly found objects in homes around the world: flower pots. Symbolizing growth, sustainability, independence, nurturing, and community, the humble flower pot is brought to life in this open-length musical work led by Art of Elan musicians and performed by the entire audience on hundreds of flower sustainably-sourced flower pots. The piece consists of a duet played on flower pots with the musicians also leading audience members on their own flower pots to create an immersive and communal experience suitable for all ages. Over a fifteen-minute period, audience members are led through simple musical games with instructions given bilingually in English and Spanish.
After this short experimentation session, the newly formed musical ensemble of strangers, friends, and community members are guided in a performance by the two Art of Elan musicians, creating a complete musical experience. The flower pots will be sourced locally through donation and second-hand stores, and will be gifted afterwards to local community gardens along with seeds so that the performance acts as the catalyst to the bloom of communal experience and into the growth of potential food for the community. The act of expanding one’s comfort zone through learning something new, and creating art together, creates an ephemeral but meaningful bond between members of the community. Through this experience we are all reminded of what it is to be human, and that something beautiful can be created by the simplest and smallest of means.
