ART INSTALLATION | FILIPINO CULTURE | TEXTILES | TRADITIONAL ICONOGRAPHY
Nandito (Here) is an installation project in which traditional barong tagalog fabric and discarded barong tagalog are quilted together. Barong tagalog is an embroidered formal shirt, considered to be the traditional national dress of the Philippines. It visually combines the elements from pre-colonial native Filipino and colonial Spanish clothing styles. Traditionally made out of sheer textiles such as pina or abaca it was historically rumored that the translucent fabric allegedly showed if the wearer was concealing a weapon underneath. Today the barong tagalog is usually worn for special occasions including wedding, religious functions, and other celebratory events. Nandito (Here) acknowledges the Filipino-American presence in the community while honoring cultural traditions, ties to colonial past, and the fusion of historical background evident through an iconic object.
